The couple sits close together in the gondola, with the buildings standing directly at the water's edge. There is little distance for a close portrait. An embrace is enough, while the facades place the image firmly in Venice.
For me, this is part of Venice's photographic appeal: the city and its people can appear together. A wedding here can connect several locations, with travel between them on foot or by boat. The routes therefore deserve as much attention as the celebration itself.
I am Maurice from Renois Weddings. I photographed the following series on September 24, 2026, at Content Experience Italy. It was created as a staged editorial and offers inspiration for your wedding photographs in Venice.
Day 03: A visual story by the water
The series connects portraits at a landing stage with photographs from the gondola. On open water, the surroundings take up more space in the frame. In the narrow canal, the focus shifts more strongly to the couple.
This suggests an idea for your photography planning: a few locations can produce very different images. You do not need a route past every sight. A carefully chosen itinerary leaves more time for portraits and for yourselves.
Formal clothing meets facades marked by visible wear in these photographs. The setting therefore has its own character and remains recognisably Venice. For your day's design, you may want to pick up some of these existing colours and materials.

A wedding in the city or a celebration in the countryside?
At a villa with a garden, many parts of the programme can take place on the same grounds. At a wedding in Venice, the chosen routes have a greater influence on the schedule. Think early about how much movement you want for your group.
A planned gondola ride can give you time as a couple while your guests are looked after elsewhere. It needs its own place in the schedule and a confirmed booking. Agree the route and preferred landing stage with the provider well in advance.
If you prefer an enclosed setting for the whole group, check the private areas at your venue. A villa in the Veneto hinterland can be a suitable alternative. The overview of wedding destinations in Italy offers further regional ideas.
Plan the routes so there is time for conversation
A street address alone is often not enough as a meeting point by the water. Note the exact landing stage and a recognisable landmark nearby. Also clarify which sections will be covered on foot and which by boat.
A long dress and luggage can affect the routes, as can limited mobility. Ask your venue about suitable access and coordinate transfers with the relevant providers. Leave enough buffer time so one delay does not determine the rest of the schedule.
For public transport, you can use the official information from ACTV and the AVM app. Whether a scheduled boat or a water taxi is right depends on the route and group size. The return journey after the celebration should also be arranged in advance.
From a photographic perspective, I would like to use these transitions when they fit your day. A short stop by the water can create space for a portrait. We should discuss in advance where you will be travelling with your guests and where time together as a couple can happen.

Keep the city in the frame
The gondolier remains visible in the gondola photographs, with windows and balconies behind the couple. Details like these connect the portraits. For me, they belong to a visual story that makes the location recognisable.
Venice is also a busy city with public paths. If you would like more privacy, we can check suitable time windows and areas at your venue. You cannot assume that public spaces will be empty.
Natural light and a plan for changing weather
For your portraits, light and available time matter most, rather than a long list of motifs. A bright landing stage presents different conditions from a narrow passage between buildings. I would therefore coordinate the schedule with the locations you actually choose.
For bad weather, set a shorter route and an accessible indoor space. Check whether photography is permitted there and what arrangements are required. A backup plan agreed together makes decisions easier on the wedding day.
High water can also affect individual routes and connections. Before the date, check the city's notices and the forecast from Centro Maree. Choose one person to keep your guests informed of short-notice changes.

Civil or symbolic wedding in Venice
For a civil ceremony, planning begins with the responsible registry office. The City of Venice publishes different guidance for residents and couples from abroad. The documents and deadlines that apply to you depend on your personal situation.
Use the Comune di Venezia information as a starting point and clarify your case directly with the authorities. Further binding bookings should be based on a confirmed date and clear requirements. A symbolic ceremony can be shaped around you, but it does not replace a civil marriage.
Questions before your wedding in Venice
What should day guests know before travelling?
Give them precise meeting points and information about the planned routes. They should also check the current rules for the Contributo di Accesso. Whether registration or payment is required depends on the date and their personal situation.
Is a gondola ride suitable for every group?
Discuss with the provider who the ride is intended for and what boarding options are available. A couple's portrait session on the water has different requirements from a transfer for the entire group. Clarify capacity and accessibility before booking.
How much time does photography coverage require?
That depends on which parts of your day you want to document. Getting ready and travelling between several locations requires more time than a single ceremony with portraits. The destination wedding timeline guide provides reference points for planning.
